Just a quick word of caution...when using a neti pot, I found it difficult to get the water to the right temperature. If it is too cold it is iritating and if it is too hot it can burn the sinuses! I think mixing 1 cup of tap water with 1 cup of almost boiling water works pretty well to get a good temperature. With pollen from spring and fall, a neti pot works wonders! Lynne
I find that if the water feels warm but not hot to my hand, it's just hot enough to pour into the pot. It cools a bit there. And I always use either spring water or filtered water. Thanks, Lynne.
I just returned from an almost three week trip to Guatemala in which I spent a full week in a Guatemalan family home where I got the inevitable "traveler's diarrhea" about five days into the trip. I took immodium and threw up a few times and then felt better.
However, I am back and my digestion is still not right - cramping, diarrhea and then constipation. I would like to try to beat this without excessive drugs and tests. Any suggestions other than the garlic, cayenne, and ginger tablets that I am taking several times a day with parsely tablets to keep the garlic smell away?
Also, the food in Guatemala is not great for an O - little meat, no leafy greens, lots of corn, potatoes, cheese, black beans. I was able to totally avoid wheat, but would like to hear what might be helpful to get my system back into gear as I felt great before I left. The country is beautiful, the people are amazing, and I would not have missed it for anything - even to avoid the present discomfort. I have the letin blocker for o's, but do not know how to use it after the fact, and have some heallix on order. Thanks for any help you can offer. -- melinda
PolyFlora-O is what you need to return your digestive colony to normal -- at the therapeutic level for two weeks, then continuing at the lower dosage. Deflect-O can start cleaning up the residual damaged cells, so I would take one, three times daily, with lots of water between meals.

Dear Heidi, I wrote a while ago asking about the changes in the arthritis protocols - specifically to do with the use of glucosamine which seems to have been dropped in the current website information.Perhaps you haven't replied yet because you are waiting to recommend the new arthritis book? I am currently finding that a niggling hip pain which has recently reappeared in my life seems to be controlled with thrice daily cod liver oil capsules (1000mg x 3) There is a much fancier salmon oil one now in the health shop, and also a combined product with several of the A protocols, but these tend to be more expensive. I notice that the arthritis protocols on line have changed a bit from the 2002 Encyclopedia, in particular that chondroitin and glucosamine have disappeared. Would the online protocols represent the latest developments? I have been lucky enough to find a natural remedy in my health food shop which combines many of the on line A arthritis protocols and it appears to be working, along with the diet of course. A further question: is Green Drink (Harmonica deluxe) basically green tea? I don't know how to purchase the NAP goods in Australia so have to make do with what I can approximate. One of the resources available to us here is the product database. If you go to the Store, hit "search," and enter Harmonia, for example, you'll be given a page with a link that says "More info." Hit that one. There you will see all the ingredients of the product. Makes it a snap to check for any item to which you might be sensitive, and figure out your own formulas if you're not able to order the product itself.

Hi Heidi, I'm writing for Dana, Type O, who wrote to you about depression. My daughter, who is also type O, was suffering from many symptoms of mild depression. I took her to our naturopathic doctor and she recommended 5-HTP, an omega 3 supplement, and extra B vitamins. Exercise, as you also mentioned, is so important. But now that several months have passed, I feel certain that the 5-HTP is what has made the difference for my daughter. It's a very safe, nonprescription, naturally occuring substance that is a precursor for tryptophan, the amino acid that our brains use to make serotonin. I hope this info is helpful to Dana. I think I actually figured out the prob... SOY. Soy milk, and tofu to be specific... I think I'm okay with tempeh, and miso... I think... Never tried Natto, but I will if I can find some. Any other A's out there that have a huge problem digesting/eliminating soy??
Thanks be to Janet for the remedy she supplied... If eliminating certain soy products for a month doesn't do it, you bet I'll be enjoying some of that brew! maybe rice or almond milk... If only I could find some w/o safflower oil or vegetable gums!
How many grams of animal/egg/bean/legume/nut/seed protien should I be consuming a day?? 20 grams? 100? Never could figure this one out. Would it vary based on secretor status? I am 6'1, 175lbs, 22 yrs. Thanks again and bless you!!
Hello, Jim! Many, many people have trouble digesting soy at first. Feel free to eliminate the non-fermented forms as you are doing, and continue with tempeh and miso. They're higher-quality food forms anyway, due to the process used in making them.
Both rice and almond milk are pretty easy to make at home, if you don't find clean commercial versions. Search back through this column, using 'milk' for a search term, and pick up tips & websites.
We don't work in grams here, so I can't help much there. I would add around 1/3 to the portion sizes listed in Live Right, since you're fairly tall and active.
One thing I missed in your reply -- the stress-relief part? It makes a huge difference in one's digestion. I asked a couple of times about how that was going, but I've forgotten if you told me. Thanks, dear! :-)
Dear Heidi, I have recently become pregnant, and am concerned about my fish intake, particularly tuna, do to potential mercury contamination. Though I knew that fresh tuna should be avoided, I also read that canned tuna shouldn't be a problem. Though Dr. D'Dadamo recommends avoiding tuna during pregnancy, he does refer specifically to 'fresh tuna' as the type to be avoided. Do you know if canned tuna is sufficiently different from the fresh to be allowed, or should I not eat it as well? Thanks so much for your help, Caroline

Commercial canned tuna is tested for mercury content, but if you want to be on the safest side, fresh fish of other kinds would do you & your baby more good.

Hello! I'm a type A and I know that black tea is an avoid, green tea is beneficial, but what about white tea? I've recently seen that the Republic of Tea has a brand of white tea. They say it comes from a specific bloom and is rare (and expensive!). Do you have any blood type info on it? Also, I'm excited about The Blood Type Diet coming to e-diets.com. Hi, Amy! We have no rating for white tea as yet. If it is added, it will appear in the TYPEbase3 database -- a search for 'tea' would find it then. For now, it can be considered an unknown, and used as a neutral by those who are in good health -- but be on the lookout for adverse reactions when using unknowns. ;-)

Hi Heidi, I wrote you about prolonged use of probiotics but I have since determined that it is okay to take them. I just turned 40 and I have ERFMT (Type A+) for eight months now and I have been doing great. A recent mammogram showed possible branching calcification. I will need a biopsy. I am scheduled to see a breast specialist 4/21. In the meantime, I started taking Quercetin and Helix Plus. I drink plenty of green tea and I also take Vitamin C, E, a multi-mineral, a prenatal vitamin and folic acid. I cannot find Burdock Root Tea.
I noticed the anti-cancer proctocol calls for 4 weeks on, the 4 weeks off. Then what? Do you repeat it indefinitely? I appreciate your help. Thanks, Dawn
Hello, Dawn ~ The protocols can be repeated as needed. People who use them preventively do repeat them regularly, while others recovering from or resolving disease conditions may repeat them now and again, if at all, when they're satisfied with their progress.
I must have missed the "prolonged use of probiotics" part of your last question -- I was under the impression you found a good dosage for yourself, and probiotics are a good thing to take regularly. :-} Are you still taking them?
Please let me know how you do -- and you may want to review the Minnesota Wellness pages on alternative cancer treatments -- it is a mish-mash of material, and anything listed there should be checked out thoroughly before using it, but there are some helpful protocols and strategies for everyone.

For stretch marks: good oils, exercise, electrolytes (like water with lemon or salt added), Deflect, and minerals. As the skin benefits from the diet & the exercise, it will heal & regain its original shape -- then the stretch marks will fade. Best wishes, Joyce! :-)

I cannot find any way to get my secretor staus tested here , even thru'the lewis blood test. So... because I notice that spelt flour increases my cravings and weight, may I assume I am a non-secretor and go with that? Is it a healthier option for anyone in doubt to assume non-secretor status than secretor as a precautionary measure? I'd appreciate your opinion.
I had my gall-bladder removed when I was 19, (forty years ago), was a vegetarian for 30 years, and decided to include digestive enzymes in my BTD regime. I would love to check out the enzymes with you. They are made by Health Nuts and contain, in order, Protease, Amylase, Lipase, Cellulase, Sucrase, Maltase, Lactase, Bromelain Ionic minerals w/alfalfa(15 mg) I only know the last is an avoid, so they have been sitting in the cupboard waiting for an informed opinion, but are not yet past their expiry date.
I have two ongoing conditions that seem to me to oppose each other. Heart disease, seriously so before eating according to blood type. Now only labile blood pressure remains. It easily goes up to 210/110, and just as easily drops to 140/86, with no easily identified trigger. My general health is markedly improved on BTD and my medications drastically reduced. I would love to be off them entirely.
The other is recurring Gout, which increases with my meat intake. I have found a good natural gout remedy,produced by Smiths, containing Yucca stalk ( i was relieved to read Peter saying that the medicinal extract Yucca is an okay for O, plus, Milk Thistle, garlic, artichoke, turmeric. All sounds okay? But I would so much prefer to be confidently gout-free without supplements. Any suggestions for stabilising a balance would be great. Whew that was very long winded. OK, here goes! If you're in the position that you cannot find your secretor status, use the food lists in the Food, Beverage and Supplement Lists mentioned at the bottom of this page. They are designed for people who don't know if they're secretors or nons.
The enzyme combo you have is OK except for the alfalfa, as you noted -- I'd say go ahead and use them up, but find a product without avoids for the next time round. And for the gout prepraration -- it's best not to take milk thistle indefinitely except under medical supervision for specific conditions.
Have you looked into the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Enhancement protocols on this site? And for gout, have you tried black cherry juice? It has a great history of effectiveness, and hey -- it's food. ;-) One tablespoon daily with each meal. See what you think. :-D
Hi Heidi, I absolutely enjoy your column and read it every day. I am a 29-year-old O+ woman (secretor status unknown). I am about 15-20 pounds overweight, and I have had psoriasis since the age of three, sometimes in very small patches on my elbows, other times (especially in the winter) I have a few more spots on my arms and legs. I have noticed that cutting out the wheat has been especially beneficial for my skin.
I also suffer from bruxism (grinding my teeth in my sleep) that subsides somewhat (to my knowledge) when I get regular exercise.
The real complication is that I was diagnosed with mononucleosis in September. After giving myself recovery time from work for 2 + weeks and taking it easy with other activities for about 2 months, I went on my way with duties at work and the like.
Afterwards my immune system was weak, as I expected it to be. As an elementary school teacher I am constantly coming in contact with all kinds of germs. I seemed to catch colds easily and was experiencing a reoccurring sore throat every few days, sometimes everyday. I started the BTD in January to boost my immunity, lose weight and clear up my skin. It seemed to help but the sore throats still came back.
After more blood tests I have found out that I still have mono, 7 months later.
My question is this. What is the best, most practical way for me to approach the O diet? My main objective is to get rid of the mono. Are my problems related (weak immune system)? Are there specific supplements that would be helpful? I know that vigorous exercise is beneficial but it takes a toll on me. I went walking/running a few days ago and felt totally wiped out the next day. I have Eat Right/ Cook Right/ and Live Right and I’ve read them all from cover to cover. The classic treatment for mononucleosis is powerful antibiotics and complete rest for a number of weeks. I had it once, and went on a four-day meditation retreat two days after being diagnosed (very conscientious of me, eh? I wasn't aware at that time how infectious mono is!). The retreat consisted of meditating, eating, three walks daily, and sleeping. When I returned, my doctor nearly fell out of his white coat when he couldn't find any trace of the problem. So, at least in my case, the deep rest provided by frequent meditation was enough to allow my body to do what it needed to do.
I would also add Heallix daily. You will need plenty of sleep, probably twice what you're getting now. If you have a meditation practice or can learn one, now's the time. Meditation is unbelievably effective in resolving immune system deficiencies.
I agree with you that strenuous exercise while you have mono is a no-no. Boost the fresh vegetables, especially mineral-rich foods of all kinds, and get adequate protein and plenty of water every day. Please let me know how you do! :-)
Heidi, I'm a B+ (secretor status = unknown) on the BTD for exactly one year. After an initial period of extremely bad constipation, I've experienced dramatic health improvements. I've lost 45 pounds, 40 points on my Cholesterol count, and even lost some gray hair! I eat only neutrals and beneficials supplementing my diet with a B complex, methyl B12, 5htp, and fish oil.
I need your advice regarding several concerns. I have difficulty with motivation. Call it inertia, low level depression, or just a lack of get up and go. Just started the 5HTP maybe that will help in time.
The second issue is an addiction to dark chocolate that began soon after I got into the BTD. Lastly, I have a problem with memory, specifically recall ability. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have. You have been a great help to me this first year on BTD. Thanks alot. Paul

It sounds like you could boost your mineral intake. Magnesium, particularly, but a good all-round ABO-specific mineral like Phytocal-B would change your outlook and relieve those cravings in short order.
Gingko biloba, Siberian ginseng and vinpocetine are great for improving cognitive functions in type B.
I always recommend to any of my type B friends feeling rather low-energy, that exercise is the key. And they say exercise is boring, besides they have no energy to exercise. At which point, I hit them with the Tibetan 5 Rites. It's a fascinating little practice which takes just a few minutes and does wonderful things. Write back and tell me you've tried it, and how you felt!
