Hi Heidi, I just read some of the back "columns" of On the Diet, and saw the one regarding Jim's problems with constipation. May I recommend a remedy that my naturopath gave me a few years ago that has worked perfectly every time I've used it?
You take a whole bunch of parsley, organic if possible, and chop it up coarsely. Throw it into a pot with at least 2 quarts (litres) of water (good quality, of course). Add a chunk of fresh ginger root that's been grated or chopped finely. Probably a piece 1" x 2" or so. Taste will tell the right size for the next time.
Bring to a boil, then simmer, covered, for 20 minutes. Strain the resulting brew into clean glass jars and take a cupful at least once a day. If the ginger is too hot to enjoy the experience, add a little water until it is less strong. This will last several days in the fridge. Someone once said they liked adding freshly squeezed lemon juice to the brew, and that, of course, will do no harm.
I hope this helps, not only Jim, but others with this rather common and persistent problem. Best of all, Jim, it's not an expensive cure and it's all natural ingredients, beneficial for most of us on the BTD. All the best, Janet
Wonderful, Janet! Many thanks, dear! :-)
Hello Godsent , Do you know the song 'heaven must be missing an angel'? You can't fool me I know it's you they are singing about.
My name is howard,I am 39 years old. I was born in Jamaica but am living in Belgium for the past 27 years.I have the best bloodtype there is 'B'.Secreter status unknown.
I started the diet a little more than a year ago.In General my health have improved .My skin is cleared from all bumps. My bad cholesterol has gone down by aprox. 60 points(167) .No more acid reflux. Weight loss 6kg. I am 1.81m and 77 kg.I am lean muscular and I look like when I was 18 again.Don't feel bloated anymore.Whenever I eat wrong my weight goes up almost immeadiatedly by about 2kg.Luckily it drops slowly back to normal after a week or so.
So whats my problem? I am SICK.What a nasty word for someone who erfht. I haven't been sick for the last year. And I tell everybody about it. And now the got me .I have a bad cold Heidi.I have been coughing and spitting up green and yellow mucous for 4 weeks now.Nothing seems to help.I even took Augmentin 875 (Antibiotic)for 10 days and it's still not gone.
People are starting to say that it's because of the diet.Even before I was on the diet I was never sick that long.Maximum a week.I don't have any fever, but my energy is very low and I lost 3kg even though I eat enough. Any wisdom or suggestion will be welcome.I ordered Healix Twice in march but it still hasn't arrived.Maybe they won't send it to Belgium. Anyway I'm sick and tired of this cold.I hope I don't have any underlyind illness. Lots of love to you and yours Howie.
A very warm welcome to you, Howie! Sorry it's under such trying circumstances!
It sounds like you got a lovely sinus infection. If you just feel weak, but have no fever, there are several things you can do to clear out the remaining mucus. I don't think antibiotics would help, so I wouldn't do another round.
First, go to a health food or supplement shop (or online), and look for a 'neti pot.' It's a little thing like a teapot, designed for delivering water into your sinuses. Use very warm water with a couple of pinches of sea salt. The technique of 'nasal irrigation' seems odd and awkward at first, but once you've tried it a few times, it's quite simple. Just lean your head back and to one side, and pour the water slowly up one nostril -- lean your head to the other side, then allow the water to flow out the other nostril, or out of your mouth (don't swallow all of it). I suggest doing this in a bath or shower in the morning, just because one tends to pour the water all over the place when first learning! ;-> It can clear out that gunk and make you much more comfortable -- and it's a preventive measure against future sinus problems, too.
While you're 'clearing out,' I suggest cutting back or eliminating cheese and milk. Type B generally does fine on dairy, but your body may not want it just now. See what you think. I would definitely take supplemental magnesium, around 600 mg twice daily, the same amount of Siberian ginseng (Eleutherococcus senticocus) and tinctures of magnolia and wild indigo, as recommended in the Sinus Health protocols linked here. While you're there, explore the Allergy and Antibacterial protocols, too. You can pick and choose, or just use the few things I mentioned above.
Take it easy, and have a regular sauna or steambath if you can ~ the heat is soothing and encourages the sinus tissues to 'water off' and expel the remaining mucus. Your weight loss is probably due to having less appetite ~ sinus infections do that. I remember it well! ;-) There have been a number of people writing in to say they've had odd, long-lasting ailments this winter, myself included! so do have faith in your diet (those people you mentioned will come around eventually ;->) and please do let me know how you're doing! :-)
and ... thanks for the angel song! :-D
Hi Heidi, Thank you for all your hard work.
I am a Type O non-secretor. I've been following the Blood Type Diet for two weeks. I have been 100% compliant.
I have the following questions. Note: I am trying to cure myself of an extreme case of candida. My urine has always been clear, but after I started the diet everytime I urinate my urine is yellow? Does this mean anything?
I like bananas, how many can I eat per day?
I eat 2 ounces of organic sesame seeds everyday. Is this ok and do the seeds carry mold?
I drink the correct amount of water for my body weight everyday. I am urinating more than usual. Am I losing all my vitamins because of frequent urination.
How long before all mucuos leaves the body? I would also like to know what your astrological sign is. Thank You Very Much, Malachi
Welcome, Malachi! I am sorry you're battling candida. It's a rough road, but you have the very best tools available here.
Yellow urine is actually normal. ;-) The change may be a result of more vitamins and spices in your diet. It's a good thing.
Since you're trying to re-balance candida, banana wouldn't be the first choice in fruits for you. It's OK, but I would certainly emphasize others -- for instance, berries, like blueberry, black cherry, elderberry, and cranberry for now. They're very healing stuff for the digestive and urinary tracts.
Two ounces of sesame seeds is fine, as long as you alternate with other seeds and nuts. It's easy to see and smell anything wrong with sesame seed -- just take a handful and make sure they are smooth and uniformly light-colored -- then take a big whiff. If you start sneezing, you'll know they're not fresh! ;-)
It will take time for your immune system to grow strong enough to expel the candida, but it will happen. If you can, find a practitioner who tests for heavy metals. Sometimes candida surges up in order to clean up excess mercury in the system, for example. If your heavy metal tests are normal, then I'd certainly use grapefruit seed extract daily, as well as the Yeast, Allergy and Intestinal Health protocols linked here!
I hope this helps you, Malachi! ... Oh, and I'm a Capricorn. Best wishes, and thank you for writing! :-)
