I really dislike the American phrase "I'm starving." It's usually said when somebody is ready for a meal, or a snack, or is just cranky from low blood sugar following a sugar-laden meal.

I really prefer the British word "peckish" (gleaned from reading Harry Potter) because it's so much more accurate. You're not about to die from malnutrition; you simply want a snack.
